I'd say that this is quite a normal pattern for 1st term - from my experience. 1.Teacher's start getting sick (health wise) as well as sick of their students. 2.Teacher's also would be starting to feel they have got their classes/students under control/into a routine, so having a mental health day won't be detrimental to their workload. 3.Week 8/9 is also where a lot of class time is just spent on kids completing assessment tasks - all the content has been taught - so it doesn't really make a difference who is supervising the kids. 4. Contract teachers have earnt enough sick leave hours now to take a whole day off.
Everyone's sick. It's the end of term one, adrenaline has run out. People having long service leave take it before the holidays so they get a longer extended holiday.
