cooking lessons

The kids cook tea on Sunday nights. They also decide what they'd like to cook. One takes charge of the protein component, another the carbs, another the veges. We have some strange combinations. Tonight Joel made us cheese and onion flan without the pastry (2 onions, 2 cups grated cheese, 2 eggs, 2/3 cup milk), Nathan made 2 minute noodles and Micah made vegetable faces with cucumber and carrot. Here's the result:

  1. As a non-parent I find it interesting watching the behaviour of my friends' children and the corresponding attitudes of the parents and what they expect of and teach them.

Stories like yours where your young children are already learning valuable life skills like cooking are encouraging to see. :-)

  2. Hi Simone,
Sounds like a great idea. What age were your children when you started this? I'm keen to get my girls making meals in the future but I don't know when is a good time to start.

  3. hey - don't ask me for advice! I'm hopeless! Started about a month ago. Kids weren't interested before that (and nor was I) - but at the moment they're really keen. They help during the week too - one boy per night. But I set the menu.

I think start whenever you can handle it. It slows things down!
